Perhaps like the Bible, every person who reads it seems to find a different message. “Hell is the Absence of God” is fascinating simply in the range of takeaways it seems to provoke. Where do I find meaning? Why does this “blessing” make me unhappy? Why does the world seem so random? Chiang seems to remind us that, godly or not, we are and will always be people, dealing with our same human problems from generation to generation. Of the three characters the story follows, each grapples with a deeply familiar crisis, even in the face of god’s existence. It reminds us that even under heavenly influence, our core human pains would remain the same.

This wide variety of interpretations, even when god is certain and defines what is just, keys us into a strange phenomenon of modern life - with all the power we have over our environment, perhaps we just don’t need a god anymore, even if there is one.Ībove all, though, this story is powerful because it is deeply human. Others renounce god entirely, deciding that a god so careless isn’t worth their worship. God never seemed to impact his life very directly, and hell seems just the same as life on Earth, just without the visitations. Neil, for instance, sees little purpose to worship. For one thing, not everyone worships god, even with the knowledge that it is definitely there.

In Chiang’s story, this is far from the case. We would know to pray, we would find meaning and fulfillment, we would sleep easy knowing that there is an afterlife and that we can guarantee our way to heaven. I think all of us, believers or not, have at one point or another fervently wished that there was unquestionable evidence, that we could just know for sure - is it there or not? Surely, we’ve all thought, that would be the end of all our greatest existential problems.
